Talkeetna, Alaska: September 10-11, 2017

Sunday (September 10), we drove to Talkeetna. It was rainy and the clouds were low so there were no glimpses of Denali to be had anywhere. We stayed at the comfortable Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. Our room had a huge window facing Denali, but we had no scenic luck. We did see a fabulous rainbow on the way to the cute town of Talkeetna.

Talkeetna has quite a few shops, historic buildings, and good restaurants. There is a photography shop called Aurora Dora containing the work of owner Dora Miller. She was selling her stunning photographs of the Aurora Borealis. She even has workshops which I considered, but passed on. I kept thinking how wonderful it would be to live in a place where the aurora borealis was visible more than half the year, but then there's the darkness and the cold weather.

We saw another rainbow later on at our hotel.

All those rainbows, but no luck. Our flight-seeing tour scheduled for Monday was canceled by the plane company because the sky was too overcast for a view from above. We continued our drive north to Denali National Park for a short hike on the Savage River loop trail. We drove very slowly the 15 miles in and out and even though it is moose rutting season, no moose were in sight. We did see an ermine in its summer coat and an arctic ground squirrel.

We're staying in Healy (at the Dome Home) for three nights.
