Late June we flew to Juneau to hook up with a photography based trip with
Dolphin Charters. We traveled with this company in 2015 and were delighted with the photo opportunities. This time our time was spent in Glacier Bay National Park. Our accommodations were on the Delfinus which is their 50-foot wooden boat. Last time there were only 4 passengers, 1 lead photographer, 3 crew. This time there were 7 passengers, 2 lead photographers, 3 crew making the boat a little more crowded. Still, we had some great photo experiences once again.
Along the way to Glacier Bay NP, we passed the lighthouse at Point Retreat on the northern tip of Admiralty Island. In 1794 Joseph Whidbey, 1791-1795 Vancouver Expedition, credited with mapping Admiralty Island aptly named the point after retreating from a group of hostile Tlingit. Proving once again, that discretion is truly the better part of valor--he lived into his 80s.
Lighthouse at Point Retreat dwarfed by Eagle Glacier and Coast Range.
We anchored for the night just outside of the park. When the crew asked us what we hoped to see in the park, one of our fellow passengers said she wanted to see a moose. Another said she wanted to see orcas. Last time, we certainly saw orcas, but were not lucky enough to see any moose. I want to see everything.
