Sunset at Wotan's Throne from Cape Royal |
Our first morning at the North Rim, we got a slow start on our day which, photographically speaking, isn't good. Around 8ish, long after the sun was up, we found our way to Bright Angel Point. It is a short but steep trail with amazing views of the canyon and Bright Angel Fault.

I vowed to return for a sunrise and hoped for less hazy skies with maybe a cloud or two. We continued our exploration of easy trails around the lodge with a hike on the Transept Trail which travels along the Transept Canyon but there is never a good view of the landscape below. The Transept Trail finishes at the campground. On the way back toward the lodge we found the Camp Grocery Store where we also discovered Wifi for guests. The lodge doesn't have Wifi and neither do any of the cabins or motel rooms around the lodge. Cell service is also sketchy.
We were housed in one of the motel room buildings located about 1/3 mile from the lodge. Not sure how you reserve the cabins, but this was what was available when we booked our stay in February. The lodge sits on the edge of the canyon and has a spectacular view. The lodge was also where we could get food. We had a reservation for dinner each night made months in advance. Our room had a refrigerator and a coffee pot. It was otherwise spartan but adequate, and we got the benefit of extra exercise walking to and from the lodge for meals.

Late afternoon we drove to Cape Royal Road with the plan of getting to the farthest point in time for sunset. Along the way, we stopped at various viewpoints including Vista Encantada with its great colors and textures.
And, finally, the Cape Royal Trail.

The setting sun combined with haze emphasized the landscape layers--especially in black and white.
